Winnebago County is one of 72 counties in Wisconsin. The estimated population of Winnebago County in 2004 was 159,008. The county was named for the Indian tribe which, along with the Ho-Chunk nation, Sauk, Menomonee and others, initially inhabited this region in the east-central part of the state. The county is in the Oshkosh-Neenah metro area and claims Oshkosh as its county seat.

Since its settlement in the mid-1830's, Oshkosh has grown from a sleepy country village to what it is today. The Oshkosh metro area was named one of the "50 Smart Places to Live" in the United States by Kiplinger's Personal Finance June, 2006 issue.
