About Little Chute, Wisconsin Real Estate
Home Life is Pleasant in "Le Petite Chute"
Welcome to Little Chute, Wisconsin!
Nestled in the heart of the Fox River Valley, just east of Appleton, the Village of Little Chute, Wisconsin (Outagamie County) combines a pleasant small-town, semi-rural atmosphere with all the amenities of a larger metropolitan area. The community got its name in the 1600s when early French fur traders referred to a local waterfall as "le petite chute" to distinguish it from a larger waterfall which, at the time, was downriver (at what is now Grand Chute). The Village is blessed with an abundance of natural resources – including the historic Fox River on its southern border. While larger cities are just a short drive away, the Village of Little Chute offers a more pleasant overall quality of life and is truly on the river and on the way.
More than 150 years ago, in the spring of 1848, three shiploads of Catholic settlers from Holland arrived at a tiny settlement in what is now Little Chute, Wisconsin, beckoned by the leadership of Father Theodore J. Van den Broek, who had founded the Parish of St. John's there in 1836. Thus began the rich Dutch heritage of Little Chute. By 1899 the population had grown to over 900 residents, and the Village was officially incorporated.
Over the decades, Little Chute's identity as one of the most proudly Dutch-American municipalities remained strong, even as it welcomed members of many other nationalities. In 1981, for the first time in perhaps a hundred years, an annual Dutch festival called a Kermis was celebrated in Little Chute, and it is still going strong today. Out of the Kermis grew the idea of constructing an authentic Dutch windmill to commemorate Little Chute's unique history, and the first funds for the project were set aside. The Little Chute Windmill will soon rise 10 stories and more than 100 feet above the village downtown. It will be the tallest structure in Little Chute apart from St. John's steeple and will be prominently visible for miles around, one of the true landmarks of the Fox Cities. The site will also include an attached Visitor Center and Little Chute Historical Society Museum, as well as beautifully landscaped grounds with no shortage of Dutch tulips.
Today, Little Chute has a centralized downtown retail district featuring hometown dining, crafts, collectibles and brand-name clothing at discount prices. Those who call LIttle Chute home and their guests enjoy the number of quaint shops that preserve the vitality of the downtown area, which is easy to get to and offers ample parking.
The quality of life in Little Chute is enhanced by a rich park system and recreation programs. There are five major parks and four tot lots. Located along the Fox River, Doyle Park includes an outdoor heated pool with a 201-foot water slide. The park is also the site of the annual Great Wisconsin Cheese Festival, which kicks off "June Dairy Month" and a fall Kermis Festival. Heesakker Park is also located along the Fox River. It features a large wooded area with trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Two soccer and ice skating rinks add to its year-round enjoyment.
