Grand Chute, Wisconsin, is a town located in Outagamie County. With a population of 18,392 (2000 census) and a property valuation of over $2.2 billion, Grand Chute is the largest town in the State of Wisconsin. Grand Chute is considered part of the Fox Cities metroplex that also includes Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. The French gave Grand Chute its name by referring to the large rapids in the lower Fox River as "le grande chute" when directing other travelers to the area. (The river has since been rerouted.)

One of the first settlers in what is now the Fox Cities area was Hippolyte Grignon (hipp-POL-i-tay GREEN-yone). In 1835, Grignon built the White Heron Inn at the head of le grande chute (the large rapids). Reverend Reeder Smith soon followed, purchasing land on behalf of Amos A. Lawrence as a site for the Lawrence Institute, today Lawrence University. In 1848 Brown County surveyors began laying out plots for the school and for a village. First the village plat of Appleton was laid out, followed by Grand Chute. That area, west of Appleton's plat and separated from Appleton by deep ravines as well as a dense forest, was at the point opposite the magnificent waterfall (or, le grande chute) and soon grew to be a key intersection of commercial traffic through the Fox Valley and the Green Bay to the east.

The first United States census taken in the area in 1850 listed a population of 619 people, most of whom were associated with the burgeoning Lawrence Institute. On February 17, 1851, Outagamie County was created by the State Legislature, and Grand Chute was transferred to its jurisdiction to become its county seat.

Today, there is never a dull moment for Grand Chute residents and their guests. As home to the largest retail center north of Milwaukee, anchored by the Fox River Mall, Grand Chute gives the Fox Cities its reputation as "Wisconsin's Shopping Place." Grand Chute is also the home of the Fox Cities Stadium and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Class "A" baseball team. Located in the heart of the Fox Cities area, Grand Chute actively supports the paper mills and manufacturers that lead the industry and economic prosperity of this region of Wisconsin.
