Freedom, Wisconsin, is a small but proud town in rural Outagamie County, northeast of Appleton and southwest of Green Bay. The community consists of rural lands, farms and more urbanized subdivisions as well as an Industrial Park. When Wisconsin became a state in 1848, its progressive position on issues of human rights and its active participation in the anti-slavery movement were already well-known throughout the nation. As a consequence, African-Americans came to Wisconsin seeking freedom, security, education and an opportunity to earn a livelihood. Wisconsin was home to the last stations on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves seeking freedom in Canada. But not all who sought freedom moved to Canada. Some put their roots down in Wisconsin.

The Town of Freedom dates back to May of 1830, when an appreciative escaped slave claimed and cleared a nine-acre parcel of fresh land and built his family's freedom. At the time that James Jackson and his wife came north, the budding settlement was called Sagola, an Indian word meaning "good morning."  When the town was incorporated on June 5, 1842, the Township took on a new name in recognition of Jackson. It is that cherished freedom that gave the community the unique and proud name it has today.

Throughout its subsequent history, Freedom has become home to many of Irish, Germans and Dutch descent. Its ample and native stock of trees and access to shipping lanes along the Fox and Wolf Rivers ensured that lumbering would be the town's chief industry.

Today, the Town of Freedom is a rapidly growing community of 5,578. Garret Lowney, a 2000 Olympic Bronze medal winner and member of the 2004 USA Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Team, grew up and trained in Freedom.
