The community also straddles the borders of two other neighboring counties, Calument and Winnebago. While the majority of today's Appleton population lives in Outagamie County, the fastest growing portion of Appleton is in Calumet County. The Fox Cities region, which includes other larger communities that follow the Fox River, has a total population of 350,000. The Morgan Quitno Press recently ranked Appleton as the safest metropolitan area in America.

Fur traders seeking to do business with Fox River Valley Indians were the first settlers in Appleton. After centuries of European migration and western expansion of the United States, new settler Hippolyte Grignon built the White Heron Inn in 1835 to house his family and serve as an inn and trading post. The next decade, the financial backing of Amos Lawrence enabled Lawrence Institute (now Lawrence University) to be chartered in 1847. Samuel Appleton donated $10,000 to the newly founded college library, and in appreciation, his name was given to the community. Appleton was incorporated, as a village, a few years later - in 1853 - and four years later as a city.

An early Appleton contribution to America's growing technological sophistication came when Dr. Alfred Galpin connected his bank and his residence by telephone. Later, a druggist installed several phones in his store, linking them with those in other offices. The Wisconsin Telephone Company purchased this exchange in 1881. Ever since, area business has contributed greatly to Appleton's economic prosperity and progressive attitude. The paper industry, beginning with the building of the first paper mill in the city in 1853, has been at the forefront of the development of Appleton, In order to provide electricity to this industry, the nation's first hydro-electric central station began operation in Appleton on September 30, 1882. Not too long afterward, in August of 1886, Appleton was the site for another national first, the operation of a commercially successful electric streetcar company. Electric lights replaced gas lamps on College Avenue in 1912.

Today, Appleton, Wisconsin is home to national health insurance companies and paper giants Kimberly-Clark and Appleton Papers. Educational and business enhancement opportunities are plentiful with the accredited Lawrence University and Fox Valley Technical College.

With 24 public and 13 parochial schools, education has been and remains a priority in Appleton. Lawrence University's 84 acre campus, with 32 instructional, recreational and administrative buildings, 1200 students drawn from 45 states and 38 foreign countries, and a faculty of 114 men and women, lies east of the city's attractive, lively downtown. Students and faculty members supply the community with an endless array of music, drama and sports activities.

The Fox Cities area holds plenty of opportunities for world-class entertainment, fine arts, recreation and sporting activities as well as unforgettable shopping. The Fox River Mall attracts shoppers from throughout East Central and Northern Wisconsin as well as nearby parts of Michigan and Minnesota. Other popular activities for Appletonians and their guests include following their Fox Cities neighbor, the Green Bay Packers, or relaxing with a Broadway production at the recently opened Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, enjoying a concert in a park on a summer's eve, cheering on the minor league Timber Rattlers or gazing at a planetarium show at the Barlow Planetarium.

The preservation of Appleton's history has been the work of the Outagamie County Historical Society. Its museum contains artifacts of Appleton's famous native son, escape artist Harry Houdini and author Edna Ferber, who grew up in Appleton. The museum showcases Appleton's heritage as a progressive, industrious community in Wisconsin's Fox River Valley. (The popular film actor, Willem DaFoe (Platoon, Spiderman, etc.) also hails from Appleton, as does Fox News Channel anchor and legal expert Greta Van Susteren.)
